Intra-Gastric Balloon
The intra-gastric balloon is a non-surgical, non-invasive weight loss solution. The Orbera 365 is a balloon that lasts up to 12 months and is a device that is inserted into the stomach. The balloon will help you to feel fuller for longer and to encourage smaller portions of food intake.
Why consider the intra gastric balloon and what are the benefits?
The balloon is a reversible weight loss solution and only lasts up to 12 months.
This is a non- invasive procedure that is quick and doesn’t require an overnight stay in hospital
Helps encourage to change and establish healthier lifestyle choices.
Ideal for patients who are eligible for surgical weight loss.
How is the procedure performed?
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The balloon is inserted by using an endoscope into the stomach. Once placed the balloon is then filled with a sterile saline solution to a volume of 400 – 700cc. The endoscope is then removed from the stomach.
Preoperative Preparation
You undergo a full medical evaluation, including blood tests and sometimes an endoscopy, to ensure you’re a suitable candidate.
You may receive dietary counseling and a weight-loss plan to prepare your body for the balloon.
Sedation or Light Anesthesia
On the day of the procedure, you’re mildly sedated or placed under light anesthesia for comfort and safety.
Balloon Insertion via Endoscopy
A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a camera is passed through your mouth and into your stomach.
The deflated balloon is guided into your stomach through the endoscope.
Balloon Inflation
Once in place, the balloon is filled with sterile saline (usually 400–700 mL) or gas until it reaches the desired size.
The goal is to partially fill the stomach, reducing its capacity.
Endoscope Removal
After inflation, the endoscope is carefully withdrawn, leaving the balloon floating freely in the stomach.
Post-Procedure Monitoring
You are monitored for a few hours to ensure there are no complications like nausea or discomfort.
You’ll be put on a liquid diet for a few days, followed by a gradual transition to soft and solid foods under the guidance of a dietitian.

Is this procedure safe?
The balloon has a low rate of complication, and is a fully reversible procedure, however every procedure has risks. These include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort immediately after placement
- Reflux
You will be prescribed medication to reduce these symptoms.
We recommend having a discussion with Dr Puhalla during your consultation to answer any questions or concerns.
Are there any pre-operative tests prior to surgery?
Yes, in most cases Dr Puhalla will refer you for a pre- operative blood test or scans. He may also refer you for a psychological pre operative assessment to assess surgical readiness.
It is essential for patients to have a gastroscopy prior to balloon placement. Balloon insertion is contra-indicated for patients who have moderate to large hiatus hernias, or those who have ulcers.
Can I still drink alcohol after having the balloon placed?
It is advised to make a conscious effort to limit your alcohol intake and frequency. The regular use of alcohol may lead to poor food choices, weight regain, liver damage, reflux and irritation to your gastrointestinal tract.
Can I smoke or vape after having the balloon place?
Smoking or vaping should be stopped prior to undergoing your procedure. Smoking or vaping can have adverse effects and this can delay and impact your healing post operatively. There is also an increased risk of developing peptic ulcers (stomach ulcers) from smoking or vaping.
Can I get pregnant after having my procedure?
It is known that weight loss surgery may improve fertility in both females and males. Pregnancy should be avoided in the first 18 months post operatively, due to potential risks to both mother and developing baby. To avoid pregnancy during this time, it is recommended to consider contraceptive options by speaking to your GP. The Oral Contraceptive Pill is less effective after a weight loss surgery, therefore other methods should be used. This is a key consideration if wanting to undergo surgery. If pregnancy occurs earlier than recommended, please contact our team.
Can I have plastic surgery after weight loss surgery?
I have heard gallstones are common after surgery, will this affect me?
Is there anything I can’t do when I have an intra gastric balloon?
It is recommended to refrain from martial arts, bungee jumping and skydiving to reduce the risk of the balloon popping.
