Understanding your hernia surgery options can feel reassuring. As a specialist general surgeon on the Gold Coast, Dr Harald Puhalla takes the time to determine which procedure is right for you.

Here is what you should know about your treatment options.

Open Hernia Repair

This is the traditional and highly reliable method for fixing a hernia. The surgeon makes a single incision directly over the hernia site. The protruding tissue is then gently guided back into its correct position, and the weakened muscle wall is repaired.

In most cases, a surgical mesh is placed to reinforce the area and prevent the hernia from returning. This is the most effective surgery for very large or complex hernias.

Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

This is keyhole surgery. Instead of one larger cut, the surgeon makes 2-3 very small incisions. A small camera, called a laparoscope, is gently inserted through one of the incisions, giving the surgeon a clear view of the hernia from inside the body. Specialised tools are used through the other small incisions to perform the repair, also using a surgical mesh.

The benefits of a laparoscopic hernia surgery are:

  • Less post-operative pain and discomfort
  • Minimal scarring
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery to normal activities and work

Robotic-Assisted Hernia Repair

Robotic-assisted repair is an advanced form of minimally invasive surgery in which your surgeon will use specialised instruments on robotic arms from a console. This provides a magnified 3D view and superior dexterity, allowing for high precision in instrument movement. The added control and stability can be advantageous for complex or recurrent hernias.

Which Approach Will Your Surgeon Recommend?

Ultimately, the final decision will come down to an extensive medical assessment, taking into account your personal risk factors like the size and location of your hernia, whether it is a recurrent hernia (one that has come back after a previous repair), and the general state of your health.

As an experienced general and upper-GI surgeon, Dr Puhalla will expertly determine if laparoscopic hernia repair, open hernia repair or robotic-assisted repair is suitable for your unique case. Contact us to book a consultation for your hernia surgery at our Gold Coast clinic.
